Today was a good day. There were some shady spots but over all a good day. Hubby was the main guest speaker at a Memorial Day gathering. He has spoken at High School Assemblies before, but never at a City observance. So he wore his dress blues and looked as handsome as ever! My oh my that man of mine looked good this morning!
There have been a few times over the past few years when a speaking engagement has caused him to feel a few butterflies. This was definitely one of them. In 2006 Hubby found out that the man who taught him to be the solider he is, was killed in Iraq by an IED. I was pregnant with Miniman, and had his name picked out for years. Hubby came to me and asked me if he could honor his friend by naming our son after him. I couldn't say no. So Miniman has three names, but he is known by his second middle name. I type all of this so that you will understand how meaningful Hubby's speech was, to everyone who heard it, even himself. I have transcribed his speech here:
Thank you for the invitation to speak with you today. I am a SFC with the United States Army for over 15 years. From 1993 to 2001 I served as an Airborne Infantryman and was able to participate in mission in 12 countries throughout the world. I am currently a member of Recruiting Command here.
I am always honored to speak on behalf of the Army, but it is especially humbling to stand here in uniform today and speak about the many American heroes we honor in this special day.
In our country, we do a wonderful job of creating and building physical memorials. The Vietnam Wall, WWII Memorial, Korean Memorial and the 9/11 Memorial recently installed at the Pentagon are solid symbols of the nation's desire to physically commemorate our fallen heroes.
At these hallowed places, we can see and even trace with our fingertips the names of those in uniform who have given their lives in defense of our country.
Memorial Day is a special holiday, a single day during which we honor the spirit of those who died in service to our nation but whom we continue to remember and honor in our hearts. Instead of seeing a stone monument, on this day we see the faces of all those who over the years, sacrificed their lives in defense of freedom.
We see the faces of our young men and women who sacrificed their lives in the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East. We see the many young men who perished with their ships in Pearl Harbor. We see the faces of nurses who, through many wars and conflicts, provided care amid chaos; and we see the brave faces of those men and women who died in Vietnam and Korea whose sacrifices went unrecognized for years because of the unpopularity of the conflicts they found themselves in.
We think about their families and friends, perhaps people we know , and we mark this special day by celebrating their legacy while grieving their absence in out lives. For a long time Memorial Day seemed at risk of becoming just another day off work, a reason to have a picnic
or barbecue, the opening of the community pool, or the beginning of summer vacation.
But in recent years a collective shift in thinking has transpired; a new awareness of the sacrifices our military members are making is emerging, becoming an ingrained part of our American experience.
I can't put my finger on what exactly caused this shift: maybe it was the lessons learned from the Vietnam conflict, or perhaps the shared experience of seeing today's young men and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. or it could be the many movies and TV shows that suddenly have shed new light on the real sacrifices our service members make.
Regardless of the reason, something has changed about the way Americans now think of their heroes, and that shift transcends politics, cultural differences and religion.
President Kennedy once said " A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers".
Of course today we equally honor service men and women, but the sentiment remains crystal clear. A key component of our nation's greatness lies in our ability to honor, appreciate and cherish, through our actions and our memories, all those who died to ensure our freedom.
We often hear that freedom has a price and that each generation pays it's due. Today is our day to say thank you to those who for generations have foot the bill; to those who have paid so dearly- with their lives. And to their families and friends whose lives are forever changed and to whom we owe an enormous debt.
Gathering together on this day is one way to show our appreciation and gratitude. But how do we extend the reverence we feel today through the other days of the year?
And mire importantly, how do we instill and deepen the tradition of this special day for the coming generations of Americans? How do we ensure that Memorial Day continues to be observed with profound reverence regardless of whether or not we are a nation at war?
Let me make a few suggestions.
First we must teach others about the sacrifices that have been made on our behalf so that we might continue to enjoy the liberties and freedoms granted in our Constitution.
We must help future generations understand that, politics aside, the act of committing yourself to your country and being the most noble of endeavors.
We can do this by volunteering to help those veterans who are still with us, by assisting a family who is grieving the loss of a service member, by visiting those injured in the service to the nation to help them build a new life.
Second, each of us must find ways to ensure the legacy of our heroes endures in what has become a "sound-bite" culture. These dedicated men and women are worth more then that, a twenty second sound-bite. Their history deserves telling and re-telling. Find a way in your life- at work or home, at church or youth group meeting, wherever- to keep their memories alive. Honor their sacrifices, tell their stories, cherish their memories.
And finally, continue to gather together on this special day each year to pay homage to each of them. Make this day an annual reminder of the need to give of yourself in honor of those who have given everything. Treat Memorial Day with reverence and respect and others will follow your lead.
Our military is the world's greatest power. We also are one of the world's greatest instruments of peace and humanitarian assistance. Our more then 200 year history is one of service, pride, and heroism. We serve today in Iraq and Afghanistan; we defend our world's waterways from piracy, and we provide food, medicine, and comfort when natural disasters strike any nation.
Our military executes the same mission whether or not we are at war.We provide protection, deterrence, and assistance whenever and wherever needed. And in the course of that duty, we have lost many of our fellow Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen through the years.
Among those we honor today are our servicemen, gone but never forgotten, never forgotten.
I believe his speech speaks for it's self. I know that he teared up when both writing and executing it. He mentioned to me that he didn't want people to know how much he felt while preparing for this speech. I reminded him that any emotion he may feel is just all the more proof of the humanity still alive in each and every service person. Hubby told me later that his friend that I mentioned above, was all over his speech. I hope that his widow knows the impact her husband has had on mine, and for that I am grateful.

Short Cuts 2
Well, I was thinking that is about that time again.
Showers: once again I don't like cleaning the bathrooms, so I leave them for last. This is helpful because I usually clean it just before I get in for a shower. That's right clean your shower in the buff and you are sure to be the first one to use it! Just spray with whatever cleaning solution you prefer and then before you wipe it down, strip down to your birthday suit, turn on the shower and wipe away!
Nooks and Crannys: I like to get out the vacuum cleaner for these. Just break out the hose, attach the thin nozzle and away you go!
That is all I can think of for cleaning tips, I was thinking I could add on a weekly menu and shopping list. I of course will also post recipes. I will call those posts Meal Planning, and will work on the first one straight away!

Work Work Work
I know that the economy is bad. I see it everywhere. For Sometime Hubby and I have been living a little beyond our means. Because of mismanagement with money before we met, neither one of us is grounded. We live pay check to pay check and it is stressful. I started a home course and am on my way to being a pharmacy tech. . I am excited. Hubby and I were talking last night about how this is pretty big, not just for me but for us. I have talked to my family and the thing I hear most is that my children are going to suffer when I go back to work. That there will be a strain on mine and Hubby's relationship and that the dynamic will change.
I admit that I am nervous. Going beck to work is a little daunting. I told Hubby last night that this is the biggest thing I have ever done. His response was: "No it's not, you've had three kids!". That did help put things into perspective.
Hubby has confidence in me and is very supportive, I am excited and truth be told a little numb. I am not sure where this road is going to take my little family, but I am sure we will all be okay. My sisters have almost all gone back to work and I feel blessed that I have been able to stay home with my children for this long.
I started my course work this morning and will go and pick up an application tomorrow for a 2nd shift position. Hubby will be off of work at 5 everyday, so we just need to find someone for a few hours on the days I have to work. I am confidant that we will all adjust. I will still be with the kids during the day, and then in the late afternoon/early evening I will be going to work. I won't be home again until after they are in bed, but I will be with them for most of the day. Hubby will have them when he gets off of work and I am actively looking for someone for the few hours they may be needed on the days I work.
I know that this is big for our family. It's big for me and I need support right now. I have been hearing negatives mixed in with positives and I am already weary of them. So please if you have anything negative to day about me going back to work, keep it to yourself. I am not in anyway saying that Hubby is not a good provider. He is a wonderful provider, but he needs help and as his wife, I am also his help mate. Going back to work is not something that he is making me do, it is something I want to do and I am blessed that he supports me in it. I will let you all know how things go!

Toilet Training Miniman
I am calling tomorrow officially "Day One" of toilet training Miniman. I decided this afternoon that enough is enough and the only thing holding him back is ME. So we started. If he has an accident I help him, but it is mostly up to him to clean it up. He has to rinse out his poopy pants and rinse off in the shower. He has to wipe up the pee off the floor, not me.. it's not mine. He will be three in a few weeks. I know he is ready because he is dry through the night and he can stop himself mid-stream if necessary. So his muscles know what to do.. now to just get him to figure out how to control them. So far he doesn't like cleaning up his own mess. But I am right there beside him (making sure he does it right and it is as sanitary as I can make it. He is also learning to wash his hands when he is done, and flush the toilet. I am proud of my Miniman! I am also proud of myself.
I know that as a mom I can either be a stepping stone for my children or a stumbling block. I know that when it comes to his toilet training I have been more of a stumbling block. I have made excuses for him and just gone with it when he wanted to stay in diapers. He was more then content to walk around with a dirty butt and not tell me anything about it. I am hoping that now I have put him more in charge of things as it were that he will learn quickly. After all he wants to do things by himself anyway, this is just one giant leap towards Independence.. the next one is preschool.

Gardening, Graduations and Summer Plans
Goosie received a diploma from Preschool today. When they played the graduation song, I admit I teared up a bit. My girl is getting so big. I can only imagine what snap shots will play in my minds eye at her High School graduation. It is hard to believe that she is part of the graduating class of 2020. Wow! My beautiful girl! She is so exited about riding the school bus next year and can hardly wait. During the ice cream social she and Hubby had a conversation that went something like this:
Hubby: "So you are going to a big kid school next year?"
Goosie: " Yes. and I get to ride the school bus."
Hubby: " Would you like me to take you to school in the morning?"
Goosie: " No, I will ride the bus"
Hubby: "It would make Daddy very happy if he got to take you to school everyday."
Goosie: "But what about the school bus?"
The conversation ended there and I could see that Hubby's feelings were a bit bruised. He after all would LOVE to take her to school everyday until she graduated from college. I think there is enough time this summer to come to a compromise. I am thinking Daddy can take her to school and then she can ride the bus home. This way both of them are happy.
Gardening is going well. The back wall is littered with pots of different shapes and sizes full of rich soil and either seeds or seedlings. The radishes have taken off! Their secondary leaves are already showing and the rich redness is barely visible beneath the surface. The carrots have just sprouted and other things are growing! I feel already so accomplished! And I don't feel as if I have done anything! All I did was put some seeds in some soil and then watered.I picked up more seeds today, so miniature tomatoes have now been added to my little garden.. now if only I could grow a banana orchard ( you only get one bunch from a tree) that would really save some money.
Now that the school year is drawing to a close, the kids are a little older and the summer months seem wide open. Hubby and I have begun summer planning. In June we will be headed to NC first to witness a vow renewal ceremony between my parents (40 years of marriage), then we will be visiting with my sisters and their families for about a week. Then we head back home and Goosie goes into VBS while Miniman is toilet trained. The last week of June and then again the first week of July brings my parents for a visit. At some point we will make a trip up to NY to see family there. Things should settle down again in August just before Goosie starts Kindergarten. So much to do, and it always seems like there is less and less time to do it all!
I will post a picture blog soon of Miniman's summer haircut, Goosie's school program and Bubbles in all her adorable wonderment! Until next time dear readers... I am off now to make a wonderful Parmesan encrusted Tilipia with rice pilaf and steamed veggies for dinner...mmmm! I will type more later, or just post some pictures! Blessings to you all!

Birds, Vegitables and Sunshine

Recently I have started a vegetable garden, in pots. Mostly because I don't want to put in all the work for a garden and then the next people renting let it all go to crap. This way at least there is a chance I can take my plants with me.
Along with the vegetables sprouting in the various pots I have them in, I also set out bird seed in some feeders that were left here by the owners. I have always liked bird feeders and now think that this is something I want to keep

for the entire year. The kids are so excited when they see the birds eating out of the feeders. Miniman wants me to catch the birds for him. I keep telling him that birds are meant to fly freely.
Goosie asks about the vegetables. It rained yesterday and she couldn't go outside to play. She asked me why it was raining and thinking quickly I replied with this explanation. I reminded her of the seeds we planted for our vegetables. I then asked her what she had to do everyday. She replied with " I water them" and then what do you do I asked " I let them sit in the sun" so
then I asked her what happened after she watered them and let them sit in the sun. She got really excited and said that they grew! So I asked her why it rained and she answered "so that the plants can grow". I couldn't be prouder! But then she asked me if she stayed out in the rain and sun if she would grow... boy do I wish it worked that way!The birds that we have seen eating from our bird feeders are to the left. I will try to get some pictures when I am thinking about it. For now I need to finish up this blog as there are a few seedlings I need to transplant, others I need to water and the feeders need to be filled! I am going to let the kids play outside while I get my gardening done. I know how much they enjoy their time outside and now that the weather is getting nicer I let them go out more and more each day. Until next time dear readers, Enjoy the SPRING!!

Birthday's
For as long as I can remember I have been counting down until my birthday. I remember it driving my family nuts. What can I say I like birthdays (mine especially). I remember once I looked at my mom the day after and told her that there was 365 days until my next birthday.
I am now almost 29. I say almost because there are 31 days before my birthday this year. Yes, I am close to what some call the dreaded age of 30 (because you are no longer in your 20's) and I cannot help but be excited.
Every year I set goals for myself. However the goals I have had for my 29th birthday were set a long time ago (I am not sure how long, but I think I was a preteen when I set them). Here is the list of things I wanted to accomplish before my 29th birthday.
1. Get Married
2. Have at least two children (before 30)
3. See the country
4. go back to school
None of them are lofty and all were realistic. So far I have accomplished all of them, save the last. But I am starting an online course next week and will have my 4th goal completed by the end of September.
I got married at 22, about 4 months before my 23rd birthday. I had Goosie at 24, Miniman at 25(a few days shy of 26) and Bubbles at 27. I have been able to see the country because of Hubby's job. I have lived in Arizona, South Carolina, Florida, Washington, Idaho and Ohio. I have driven across the country once and ridden cross country more then I can count, but only once on my own. I have also had many different job titles my favorite by far is MOM. My life so far has been short, but so wide and one of my favorite quotes is still : " Yous mind is like a parachute, it works the best when it is open."
So excitement will never leave me when I think of the coming years. I welcome them. My sister S cried at her 30th. I am thinking of throwing a HUGE party, to celebrate my 20's and bring in my 30's! I am excited about next year.. this year I get to start planning!

ShortCuts 1
I have been thinking that it is time for me to post more tips and tricks.. tis the season! I was actually talking to another Preschool parent R about meal planning and all the wonderful things that come with it. I am planning on doing this once a week and calling it my Shortcuts blog entries. I will have them numbered so that they are easier to find.
General Cleaning:
~I have hard wood floors throughout the house and let me tell you they attract dirt like a two year old at the beach! I found a Quick Shine battery operated broom and use it quite often during the day. I was able to pick mine up at Walmart for about $26.00. Goosie and Miniman even enjoy using it! The other thing I picked up was a swiffer wet jet. It dries super fast and is a breeze to use.. so yes it gets used often.
~I have two high chairs. They get used quite a bit too. I used to vacuum out the nooks and crannies everyday but with three little ones that is getting harder and harder. So after each meal I turn the chair over (child has been removed by this point) and shake it as hard as I can. All the little crumbs and things fall out (I use my new broom) and after wiping it down with the Clorox anywhere hard surface it is ready for use again. I must mention that when I do my weekly deep clean that I take the chairs apart as much as possible and vacuum and clean every surface.
~For the bathrooms ( I loathe cleaning these, but it must be done) I use easy products. I really like the Kaboom toilet cleaner. I think it is the easiest product to use. The starter kit is about $13.00 and the refills are about $5.00. Here is the beauty, you set it up once in the tank of the toilet and then just replace the tablets every three months. Your toilet bowl stays clean and as fresh as it can depending on how many people are using it. You have to do an initial cleaning before installing the product the first time, but hey only cleaning the toilet once.. I will take that!!
~Dusting I am sure many of you have different surfaces to dust, I have quite a few of them myself. I like to use the all surface cleaner from pledge. It is wonderful and I don't have to worry about it harming Hubby's man toys (you know the TV, DVD. PlayStation, etc). I can just walk around the house and clean everything without stopping to change product.
Cooking:
Here it goes readers I am sure some of these you have heard every where and others may be new..I digress, these help me and I want to help you so here it goes!
~Meatloaf: this is actually one of my favorite tips and if you have talked to me about cooking chances are I have mentioned it to you. I don't make your usual meatloaf. I make meatloaf muffins. Instead of making a loaf out of my meat mixture, I divide it up into a muffin pan. Two muffins equals one serving. These are super easy to reheat, pack for lunches, freeze or what have you. Goosie thinks they are great and she likes to help me make them too.
~ Chicken: Unless Hubby is planning on grilling I keep the breasts frozen. When I am ready to use them I simply run water over them and then place them in a pan. Season, cover and they are usually ready in about a 1/2 hour. You can season them however you want. I usually let the breasts brown nicely on one side before turning them (seasoning the other side) and covering it with the lid and allowing it to cook through.
Well, Dear readers, I think that is it for today. I will post a recipe later (it tough deciding which one to post). Let me know what you think.

Singing
Today Goosie had a field trip to the Zoo with her preschool class. I was hoping to take the other two and the four of us enjoy the day with the animals of a different variety. Alas it was not to be. Hubby had a lower lumbar block this afternoon and his ride called and told me that they couldn't pick him up to bring him home. I was able to make quick arrangements for Goosie to still enjoy the Zoo, the other two and I spent most of the afternoon in the van. We went to drop Goosie off at the Zoo in Akron, then it was down to Canton to pick up Hubby and take him home, after that we had to pick up Goosie and bring her home. I had a MOPS meeting tonight and was glad that I could take the kids as Hubby needed all the rest he could get.
While on the way to MOPS Goosie looked quite glum, so I started singing to her. I asked her first if she would like to hear a song that I enjoyed singing when I was younger. Her eye's lit up with her response of "Oh yes Mommy, that would be perfect" (everything lately has been perfect). So I sang "Part of Your World" from Disney's Little Mermaid. As I was singing I looked in the child view mirror and was able to catch a glimpse of the expression on her face. It was one that I am almost certain mirrored mine when I heard my mom singing. It brought tears to my eyes and it was hard to keep the emotion out of my voice. As I continued singing she continued listening... it was wonderful.
I remember when Little Mermaid first came out in theatres. My Dad was going to N.C. to be a guest minister at a church in the mountains. I remember staying in the church basement they had set up for guest speakers. My sisters C and V shared a bed while my Dad slept in the other room. It was one of the few times Mom was not with us. I remember the Happy Meals Dad bought us on the way up there, the Ursala suction cup toys that were the prize and sharing a bath with my sisters playing Little Mermaid before bed. I also remember the room we slept in smelling funny. I know now it smelled slightly of mold and mildew, but then it was a bit frightening and I was glad to have my sisters there in bed with me. Since my Mom usually sung a special before Dad started the message. It seemed as though there would be no special from a guest. I have always enjoyed singing and thought absolutely nothing about singing in front of a group of people I had just met. I forget now the song I chose to sing that day, but I do remember what one of the ladies in the congregation said after the service was over. As the four of us were leaving the church, she approached my Dad and said " We missed sister S singing today, it is a joy to hear her lovely voice. But when your daughter sang she sounded so much like her mom it warmed my heart." I don't know how old I was at the time, I am sure it wouldn't be hard to figure out, but what that woman said resonated with me. I have always enjoyed and admired my mom's singing and at that time in my life to be complemented so highly made me feel wonderful.
There was one other time when I sang and was complemented so. My sister G had asked me to sing at her wedding the song they requested was "From this Moment" a duet with Shaina Twain (I forget who did the male part). G and her fiancee D bought me the demo tape and I listened to it until I had it memorized. At the wedding when it was time for me to sing, I took my place and started on que. After the wedding ceremony my sister L came to me and said that at first she thought that it was just a tape of the song that they were playing and when she looked up and realized it was me, she was impressed.
I would never say that I sound like anyone famous, all I can say for myself is that I enjoy singing and the expression it lends me to. I want nothing less for my children. Hubby is also a singer, so there are many times our house is filled with song. I remember admiring my Mom so when I was younger and now to see that admiration reflected in my daughters eyes... lets just say it is a one in a million feeling.
I know that my post was a little long this evening, I have had much to ponder. Be blessed dear readers and let me know you stopped by. I know that I started this for me, but it is good to know that I am not talking to myself sometimes..

Bubbles and Going Back To School
On another note, I have been interested for sometime in going back to school. I want to get a degree or certificate that will help me in the future when the little ones are all in school and sooner as the weaning is taking hold with Bubbles. I want to return to the work force and pay down my own debt so that Hubby doesn't have to. I was raised with the thought pattern that you need to work and help the family when ever you can. I went to work for a short time as a sandwich maker at Arby's for a few months after Miniman was weaned. I knew that I wanted at least one more child so I didn't give much thought to a career. Now that I am so close to my child bearing years being over. I want to get back to the work force. I have been thinking about careers. My mom is a Dula and I find that interesting, but don't want the hours to interfere with my family. My sister C is a Pharmacy Tech. and works hours that are compatible with Hubby's. So I want to start earning my certificate as a Pharmacy Tech. . I sent a request for information to Kaplin University, and recently got off the phone with an admissions advisor. She interviewed me and at the end of the call she told me that she is going to recommend me for the program. My hands are shaking with excitement. I cannot wait to tell Hubby, but he is at a school visit with work right now and I know it isn't the best time to call him. I will have the admission information sent to me by the end of the day and need to have it returned by Thursday. I am super excited and almost cannot wait for the semester to get started. With only 7 hours a week and 6 months away from my certificate, I know I can bring both a viable and valuable income to my household by my 30th birthday.
Enough for now, I have housework to do and kids to care for. I will keep you updated dear readers, until next time Blessings to you!

Carnivals, Sunscreen and Veggies
Today the family and I went to a carnival. It was a good time. Bubbles was dedicated this morning at church and I am pleased that she did so well in front of the church. Miniman has almost been impossible the last few nights when it comes to getting him settled down for bed. I think he just gets so tired that he doesn't know what to do with himself. Hubby has a headache and it isn't doing him any favors.
The carnival was nice, the kids were able to ride some rides and Hubby and I had some fun too. Goosie didn't want to leave, until I reminded her that she has seeds at home to water. I was able to get some great pictures and will post them later. Miniman and Goosies favorite ride was the little roller coaster for kids, they also enjoyed the super slide. Now I think they are all just tired. Hubby is already asleep in his chair and I think if I were to turn off Willy Wonka they would go to sleep.
The weaning is going well. Bubbles is down to nursing twice a day. She mostly wants to nurse herself to sleep and I am hard pressed not to let her. I will miss breastfeeding. I know that Bubbles is our last. part of me is sad, the other is relieved. Bubbles is still not walking on her own. Her Grandpa B got her a walker for her first birthday. She is in it everyday and I am reminded why I didn't want one in the first place. My ankles are sore! I have been able to get a little sun lately, and it has reminded me how good my skin looks with a little color. I am tempted to get a little more, I just don't want sun damage, so I am putting on sunscreen all the time. With the veggie garden and landscaping, I am outside more plus the swing set, we are spending more time in the fresh air. Well my dear readers, I need to call it what it is and that is a night. I will write more when I get the time, thank you for reading!
